Illustration Friday "Wise"


This week the Illustration Friday's theme is "wise".

I was going for a wise old pirate, but I think wizards are do "wise" better.
I actually need to get working on other things, but I thought I'd get this up. Need to balance creating with promotion. Doing the illustration friday makes me do both.

I'm teaching tomorrow. I wish I wasn't. I'd rather be drawing, sketching, or working on my craft.
As soon as I finish I'm zooming back home to finish up some roughs for the Tom and Jerry book.

All struggling artists go through this, I know. Having to work at something they don't wanna do in order to do something they do wanna do. But sometimes it eats at my soul. Deprives me of the energy I need to do my best.

What do you do? You have to find your fuel. My fuel is a mixture of fear, anger, hope, pride, and desire. Fear of mediocrity, anger at my own complacency, hope that I will be discovered, pride in what I've accomplished so far, and desire to make a name and make a living at creating.

What? Too straight for you? I'm sure you can handle it.

That is really cool. I love that the wizard cat looks like he's threatening to rip out the other cat's eyes if he crosses him. Great job.

Ninjas vs Cowboys, Top 10 Cowboy Manga

I talk about US ninja comics and Japanese cowboy comics on Tim Young's Deconstructing Comics . Listen to it here ! I based on the lecture I gave last year at the Koshi Manga Museum . First slide from my Ninjas vs Cowboys presentation. Here are my Top 10 Cowboy Manga: 10. Bullet Tommy  『弾丸トミー』by Shige SUGIURA This is a classic, one of the earliest comics. It's a "gag manga" for kids and so pokes fun at the various Western movie tropes. The art resembles Shoney's Big Boy, doesn't it? 9.  The Cactus Kid  『サボテン君』by Osamu TEZUKA This is one of Tezuka's early Western manga when he had only seen a few westerns at the time. I like the idea of a guy who wants to turn his parents' saloon into a milk bar. 8. The Belle Starr Gang  『ベル☆スタア強盗団』by Akihiro ITO Ito is known for his Geobreeders  saga, but this is his take on the real-life outlaw Belle Starr and her gang. Just started using toned paper

I've just started using toned paper. I'm enjoying the hell out of it. I drew 5 or 6 things today just trying out different things. In this post I'll show my retro Godzilla drawings. If you haven't seen the original Japanese version, you are missing out. The English version is usually called Godzilla, King of Monsters while the Japanese version is simply titled Gojira (at least on Hulu Plus).  The materials I'm using to work on this paper are:  Nouvel PIGMA Comicline 08 for even-weight lines Kuretake Fudegokochi brush pen for changeable width lines COPIC for shades and colors.  And finally, I use Uni-ball Signo White gel pen (Thick) for the white highlights.  I'm thinking of switching to white color pencils so I can gradate the highlights.
