Got some really good news yesterday about a project I'm working on.

Unfortunately I can only hint about my involvement. I'll throw up some slightly incriminating pics in a few days...


Until then, I have another meeting with Kodansha (3rd largest publisher in Japan) about some more work. Fingers crossed everybody.

Ninjas vs Cowboys, Top 10 Cowboy Manga

I talk about US ninja comics and Japanese cowboy comics on Tim Young's Deconstructing Comics . Listen to it here ! I based on the lecture I gave last year at the Koshi Manga Museum . First slide from my Ninjas vs Cowboys presentation. Here are my Top 10 Cowboy Manga: 10. Bullet Tommy  『弾丸トミー』by Shige SUGIURA This is a classic, one of the earliest comics. It's a "gag manga" for kids and so pokes fun at the various Western movie tropes. The art resembles Shoney's Big Boy, doesn't it? 9.  The Cactus Kid  『サボテン君』by Osamu TEZUKA This is one of Tezuka's early Western manga when he had only seen a few westerns at the time. I like the idea of a guy who wants to turn his parents' saloon into a milk bar. 8. The Belle Starr Gang  『ベル☆スタア強盗団』by Akihiro ITO Ito is known for his Geobreeders  saga, but this is his take on the real-life outlaw Belle Starr and her gang. Worldcon

Worldcon came to Japan and it was a blast! Though this is the first time I've ever gone with the main purpose of helping my creative career by meeting people and getting advice and let the fanboy stuff come second. A close second I might add. I did get a lot of great advice from publishers and artists alike. One of my faves, Michael Whelan was especially helpful and I got to look at the originals of some of my favorite works! The "fan" film Star Trek New Voyages with George Takei was amazingly good. I met a lot of interesting people at the parties. I showed my portfolio to as many people as possible. And I got some books signed and a few sketches from the pros. I also got to show my friend and co-conspirator Sonic what a con is like in the States. Overall a very good experience!
